Keyword ranking

A keyword ranking is your app's position in a store's search results for one search term, in one country and language, at the time it was measured. "Rank 4 for 'budget planner' in the US App Store" means your app was the fourth result when that search was run.

Why it matters

Rankings show whether your listing text and your app's performance put you in front of people searching for what you do. They respond to changes in the keyword field, title, subtitle or descriptions, usually over days.

They are also easy to over-read:

• A rank is a position, not traffic. Rank 1 for a term few people search brings few visitors.
• Results differ by country, language and device, and move daily.
• Tools measure ranks in different ways. Some read the store's own search, some read web search results, and each has a depth limit beyond which a rank is not measured. Know which yours uses before comparing tools.

The check that matters is whether impressions from search and downloads moved with the rank.

Example (a fictional app)

A developer of a plant care app climbs from outside the measured results to rank 12 for "plant watering" in the UK. UK impressions from App Store search rise slightly over three weeks; downloads do not change. The rank is real but the term is small. They keep the keyword and work on the first screenshot next.
